How to Store Your RV for the Winter

November 11, 2021 / by Andrew / Leave a Comment

In 2020, the number of households that owned RVS grew by 2.6 million, which highlights their popularity.

But as the days get colder, we find less use for our RVs and store them away for winter. The problem, however, is motorists don’t know how to properly do this, which can cause issues later on. Perhaps you want to store your RV this winter, but you’re not sure where to start.

Sounds like you? Don’t worry, you’ve come to the right place. Here’s how to store your recreational vehicle this winter.

Drain Your Plumbing System

The most important part of recreational vehicle maintenance is draining your plumbing system. Keeping water in your pipes is dangerous because it expands when frozen, potentially causing your plumbing system to burst. To prevent any disasters, drain before storing to give you peace of mind.

Run Antifreeze Through the Hot Water Tank

One of the top maintenance tips is running antifreeze through the water tank. Again, this is to prevent the liquid from freezing and potentially ruining your RV. You should also drain wastewater lines, valves, and tanks during this process.

Cover Your Tires

Before you store your recreational vehicle, it’s important to cover your tires. This is because they still suffer damage even when you’re not using them. To prevent this, slip tire covers over them as it will prolong their lifespan and keep them spring-ready.

Add Fuel Stabilizer

A major part of recreational vehicle care is adding a fuel stabilizer as it will stop your gas from going bad. It also helps your engine run smoothly. But if you don’t want to risk it, drain your tank and funnel the gas into a canister so it doesn’t stay in the RV over the colder months.

Clean the Inside

As you prepare your RV for winter, it’s important to prioritize recreational vehicle cleaning. Start by emptying your cabinets to remove any perishable food items and dust your countertops. You should also vacuum the flooring to ensure everything is spotless before storing.

Cover the RV

Depending on where you live, knowing where to store your vehicle is crucial. One great option is to browse RV storage units as it guarantees that it is protected from the elements.

If you’re in a warmer climate, consider covered RV storage as it reduces the amount of time your RV is spent in the sun. You could also find a nearby RV storage lot where it is kept with other vehicles. Note, this has 24-hour surveillance and a locked gate to prevent thieves.

Store Your Recreational Vehicle Properly This Winter

Hopefully, after reading this article, you know how to store your recreational vehicle in winter.

Start by draining the plumbing system, run antifreeze through the hot water tank, and cover your tires to protect them. You should also add a fuel stabilizer and rent a storage unit to prevent damage over the winter months. Good luck!
