CBD was worth over $4 billion worldwide in 2018. The global Hemp market is even bigger and is also growing quickly. A good portion of this is fueled by the growing acceptance of marijuana and similar products in the United States.
It also doesn’t hurt that the cannabis plant is diverse and can be used to make many different things. Most of these aren’t even remotely controversial.
What is the difference between CBD and Hemp, though? Is there one?
There is a difference between the two, and we’ll talk more about it in the paragraphs below.
1. What Is CBD?
CBD is short for cannabidiol. Cannabidiol is one of the key terpenes, or oils, in marijuana. Marijuana contains at least 100 terpenes, and perhaps more than twice that many.
The big difference between CBD and the other main terpene, THC, is that CBD does not cause a high. For this reason, CBD has found much more success as a medicinal or therapeutic product. It’s hard to label something a drug when it has no psychoactive effects.
Much like marijuana, there is reason to believe CBD itself may offer some health benefits. It’s often given a ringing endorsement by those with chronic pain, who claim that CBD relieves many of their symptoms.
Others claim that CBD is great for treating anxiety, and there are studies suggesting they might be right. Still, the jury is out on most medical uses. Further studies are needed to establish CBD as a valid treatment.
2. What Is Hemp?
What is the difference between CBD and hemp? One of them is that while CBD is an oil, hemp is a plant. Hemp is the plant that’s responsible for creating marijuana and CBD.
Hemp also produces more than just marijuana. In fact, you might have trouble thinking of something people haven’t figured out how to put hemp into.
The plant has a long history that’s intertwined with the history of humanity. Hemp has been traced back to 8,000 BCE in Ancient Mesopotamia. That makes it over 10,000 years old.
Hemp’s relationship with people may go back even further. Some claim that hemp was already in America when Europeans arrived.
Assuming nobody else discovered the continent earlier on, the plant would have had to come from Asia. It’s believed that humans also came to the Americas from Asia by traveling over a glacial bridge between Russia and Alaska some 14,000 years ago. Did hemp come with them?
The earliest known uses of hemp had nothing to do with marijuana. Hemp fibers are long and tough, so they’re often used to make fabrics and ropes.
Now we have Ecofibre, a hemp product that follows BRC global standards.
Some believe that hemp originated in the steppes of Central Asia. The plant proved so useful that people took it with them when settling in a new area.
The Difference Between CBD and Hemp
The difference between CBD and Hemp is pretty simple: hemp is a plant, and CBD oil is produced by that plant. We’ve talked a bit about both, but there’s only so much we can say in this article. Doing more research might be a good idea.
