The Secret to Easier Test Grading: 5 Tips for Teachers

February 10, 2021 / by Andrew / Leave a Comment

According to one study, teachers will have about 3,000 students over their entire careers.

With that many students to teach over time, test grading can become very tedious and time-consuming.

Yet it still needs to be done. So how can you start grading papers faster? Keep reading to find out!

1. Divide and Conquer

First, you should try dividing and conquering the work. If you have a stack of essays that need to be graded, you might avoid it because it seems like such a daunting task.

However, if you divide them up into sections, this might seem more manageable and easier to get done. You might want to divide it into sets of five or whatever seems more manageable for you.

If you have a test that needs to be graded, you should try grading it by going through one question at a time. This way you can focus on each answer without getting distracted.

2. Have Students Grade Each Other

Your students can be useful and help you as well! Instead of having to grade a small quiz every night, you can have your students pass their quiz to another student for them to grade it.

This only takes a few minutes in class, and it can be a great way for your students to give their peers helpful feedback. Make sure you take the time to teach them how to give good feedback so that they don’t hurt another student’s feelings.

3. Get a Scanner

If you have a test that has multiple choice questions or true/false, you can save yourself a lot of time by getting a scanner.

There are a lot of portable ones that you can buy and take home so that you can grade them easily at home. All you have to do is send the test through the scanner and it will instantly give you a report on what was wrong or right.

4. Use Technology to Your Advantage

Speaking of technology, there are a lot of softwares, like FlexiQuiz, that can help you create and grade quizzes.

You can also take advantage of many of the popular grammar checkers out there, like Grammarly. If you install that on your browser and paste students’ answers into the program, you’ll be able to catch errors immediately.

5. Try Not to Grade Everything

Many teachers feel pressure to grade everything that comes across their desk. However, that’s not always the case.

You should grade important things like tests and essays, but for bellwork or some homework assignments, you can simply give them a completion grade. Not only does it save you time, but it also helps the students learn rather than just feeling frustrated about a low grade.

Learn More About How to Make Test Grading Easier

These are only a few things to make test grading easier, but there are many more tips you can use as well!
