How to Use a Dab Rig: The Complete Guide for Beginners

May 18, 2020 / by Andrew / Leave a Comment

Dabbing is a popular way to consume THC concentrates, like oil and wax. A little bit of concentrate is placed on a hot surface until it is vaporized. This results in a potent vapor for an exceptional high.

Dab rigs can be a bit more intimidating than traditional smoking methods. So, how do you use a dab rig?

It really isn’t as complicated as you might think. Essentially you use a small torch to heat your dab rig. Once it is hot enough you can vaporize your concentrate for a potent smoking experience.

Keep reading to learn how to use a dab rig so you can reap all the benefits of your concentrates.

Learn How To Use a Dab Rig Properly

Dabbing is steadily growing in popularity across the nation. Burning weed when you smoke it incinerates delicate cannabinoids and terpenes that deliver a more satisfying high.

Dabbing uses a lower temperature than a direct flame, allowing more cannabinoids and terpenes to be preserved. Plus dab vapor is easier on your lungs and more potent than smoke.

Step One: Heat the Nail

Use your torch to heat up your dab nail by aiming the flame at the nail. You should heat your nail until it is visibly red-hot.

Take extreme care when you heat your dab nail, it will be extremely hot.

Step Two: Cover the Nail

After you thoroughly heat your nail it’s time to put your glass dome to cover the dab nail. Then let your quartz nail cool for 30-45 seconds so the nail isn’t too hot for your dab.

Step Three: Apply the Dab

Measure out your dab with your dab stick. Remember, concentrates have a very high THC content. So, don’t go crazy with your first dab, less is more.

Use the dabber to apply your dab to the nail inside of the dome. Make sure to slowly rotate your dabber on the nail to get all of the concentrates off the dabber.

Step Four: Rip Your Dab

Now it’s time to slowly inhale your sweet dab vapor. Exhale, relax, and enjoy the superior high that comes from taking a great dab.

You’ll notice that dabs provide a more potent and clear-headed high than smoking from a joint or pipe.

Dabs also have a richer taste than smoke. The vaporizing process preserves more terpenes which improve the flavor of each hit.

What You Need to Start Dabbing

Dabbing is a quick and effective way to enjoy marijuana concentrates. So, now that you know how to dab, it’s time to set up your dabbing rig. You need a few supplies to start dabbing.

Water Pipe

You can obviously buy an already assembled dab rig specifically designed for vaporizing concentrates. However, you can save a little green by modifying your existing water pipe to work as a dab rig.

It’s best to use a small water pipe for your dab rig conversion. A smaller piece will make your dabs more potent because they are delivered more quickly.

When you’re smoking concentrates you want to inhale the vapor as quickly as possible. So, a fancy piece with a ton of percolators is actually worse for dabbing than a simple, small water pipe.

Make sure you always use clean filtered water in your bong. It’s also important to change your water between smoke sessions and give it a thorough scrub every couple of weeks.

Dab Nail

A dab nail an essential part of your dab rig set up. To convert your bong into a dab rig all you have to do is is replace your bowl and slider with a dab nail attachment.

Glass dab nails are a common and inexpensive attachment for your water pipe. However, many of them can’t withstand the heat needed for dabbing and they crack easily.

A quartz nail is a better option for your dab rig. Quartz nails are designed to withstand the high heat of your mini-touch.

Dome Cap

A dome cap, also known as a carb cap fits on top of the nail to help improve your dab’s vaporization. Your dome will restrict airflow the heated nail, which improves the taste and potency of your dab.

Torch

You absolutely can’t take a dab without a  torch. Regular lighters don’t heat the nail enough to vaporize your concentrate. A propane torch is the best way to get your nail hot enough dabs.

If you have a spare creme brulee torch laying around you can use that. However, if you get serious about dabbing you want to invest in a proper mini-torch for the best results.

Dabber

A dabber is a thin tool used to apply a dab to your nail. Your dabber could be made of ceramic, metal, or glass, and it will usually have a small scoop at one end to help you get your concentrate on the nail more easily.

Marijuana Concentrate

Last but not least you need a quality marijuana concentrate to start dabbing. You can use your dab rig to smoke concentrates like wax, resin, butane hash oil, and shatter. These concentrates differ in the process used to create them and potency.

Concentrates are more potent than dry herb.

Your average nug of weed has between 15-20% THC content. However, the average marijuana concentrate has about an 80% THC concentrate. One dab really packs a punch!

Make sure to purchase your concentrates from a reputable and legally regulated dispensary. Many concentrates are created with processes that use dangerous chemicals. You want to make sure your dabs are safe by purchasing from an excellent dispensary.

The Best Way to Dab for Beginners

So, you’re ready to join the exciting world of dabbing. Now that you know how to use a dab rig, you’re ready to dab!

Dabbing is an effective way to consume your cannabis concentrates. You need to use less because each hit of vapor packs a serious punch!
