4 Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Gun for First-Time Buyers

July 10, 2020 / by Andrew / Leave a Comment

The U.S. has the highest rate of gun ownership in the world. But gun ownership is still a major responsibility, even if you live in the U.S.

Are you purchasing your first gun? Understand that choosing and buying a gun is more complex than you would expect. There are also many firearms on the market and it can be difficult knowing which one is best for you.

When you’re choosing a gun, ask yourself these 4 questions. You’ll not only know which gun is best for you but will also better understand why you’re buying a gun.

1. Why Are You Buying a Gun?

Before buying a gun, have a clear purpose.

67% of gun owners say they bought firearms for self-protection and self-defense. But many people love hunting and buy firearms for that purpose. There are also those who are buying guns now because of possible future firearm restrictions.

The gun you buy should reflect your purpose. For example, these self defense rifles are perfect for protecting your home.

2. Do You Have a Place to Store Your Guns?

Keeping a gun in your home will help protect you from a home invasion and more. Unfortunately, guns in the home pose a safety risk. For example, men are three times more likely to commit suicide if there’s a gun in the house.

Storage is one of the most important gun safety tips. Safely storing the gun will prevent an accident or worse. This is especially necessary if you have kids in the house.

3. How Many Guns Do You Plan on Buying?

The amount of guns you want to buy depends on your purpose.

For example, those who are only using guns for self-defense may only need one gun.

But those who love hunting may want several rifles. You may also only plan on buying one gun now and may decide to buy more guns for hunting or even collecting.

There are many types of rifles and guns available and each one has a different purpose. Try and gauge how many guns you plan on buying beforehand.

4. Are You Prepared to Train and Practice?

Learning to shoot isn’t as easy as it looks in the movies. All beginning gun owners need safety training before buying a gun. It’s also recommended you take your guns on the range and practice shooting.

Training and practicing not only requires time but money. You’ll have to pay for ammunition and pay to use a shooting range.

Ask These Questions Before Choosing a Gun

Gun ownership continues to be popular. If this is your first time buying a gun, understand that there’s a lot of responsibility when choosing a gun. Start by identifying your purpose. From here, you can gauge how many guns you need.

All gun owners also need to be responsible. Make sure your guns are stored safely, away from those who could possibly gain access to your gun. You should also invest time and money into training.
