7 FaceTime Interview Tips to Nail Your Next Job Interview

August 17, 2020 / by Andrew / Leave a Comment

We all know the basic rules and tips when it comes to mastering in-person interviews or interviews over a phone call, but the etiquette surrounding a FaceTime interview is a whole different ball game.

FaceTime interviews are increasing in popularity, and they have many excellent benefits, like allowing you to have face-to-face time with a potential employer without having to travel.

Here are our top seven helpful FaceTime interview tips that you won’t want to miss!

1. Practice Makes Perfect

To prepare for the interview, do a practice interview with a friend or family member. Have them ask you typical interview-related questions so you can get ready for the challenges of a real one.

Screen record your interview and watch and review it carefully to figure out how you can improve. Doing a practice interview is helpful and lessens the awkwardness of the FaceTime interview.

Doing this will also give you the chance to play around and adjust anything beforehand so that when it’s time for your interview, you can shine and stay focused without being distracted by any unexpected issues.

Your friend might give you the heads-up during the mock interview and let you know that they can hear their voice through your phone or computer’s speaker and that it’s distracting, something you probably weren’t aware of.

Thanks to the practice interview, you now know that you’ll need a pair of earphones or AirPods for your actual FaceTime interview.

Sometimes the person interviewee is responsible for arranging the interview, and it may involve more than one interviewer. If this is the case with your interview and you are wondering can FaceTime do group calls, here is a simple guide.

2. Look Into Your Camera, Not Your Screen

We know it’s tempting to look at yourself or your interviewer during a FaceTime call, but the only way to have direct eye contact with your interviewer is by looking directly at your phone or computer’s camera.

When you focus on the camera instead of your screen, you establish a more personal and stronger connection with the interviewer.

If you find it hard to avoid staring at your screen during FaceTime calls, you can place a sticky note on your screen, so you almost have no choice but to look at the camera.

3. Look and Dress to Impress

One of the most important FaceTime tips for interviews is to treat your FaceTime interview like you would an in-person interview. Dress professionally, not just from the waist up, but from head to toe. Okay, fine, you can skip the fancy shoes.

You don’t want your interviewer to catch a glimpse of your pajama bottoms if they somehow make an accidental cameo during your interview.

Look the part as well and do your makeup or groom your hair the way that you would for an in-person interview.

Wearing the right attire and looking your best shows professionalism and shows respect for your interviewer. This also demonstrates a serious interest in the job as well as places you in the best light as a possible hire for the company.

4. Mind Your Surroundings

There is nothing more distracting to an interviewer than seeing a cluttered mess in the background. This is one of the most crucial FaceTime interview tips because your interview may judge your work process based on the messiness of your room.

Remove any clutter or anything distracting behind you and keep your background as neutral and spotless as possible.

Take the time to remind the other people you may live with to grant you a noise-free space. Make sure that the room where you will conduct the interview is well-lit so the interviewer can see you properly during your FaceTime interview.

5. Close All Apps on Your Phone or Computer

Close all apps on your phone and your computer and set your notifications to silent. Closing any other apps ensures a smoother connection during the video call and also minimizes the potential for any distractions during your FaceTime interview.

Getting multiple notifications during your interview is distracts from the interview and seems unprofessional. Go the extra step and hide notifications during your call so to avoid getting distracted when they pop up on your screen.

6. Avoid Interruptions

This is especially important if you have kids or pets in the house. Yes, children and pets are cute. Though, it will look very unprofessional to your potential employer when you ask them to hang on for a second while you shoo your dog away or ask your child to leave you alone for a few minutes.

Remember to let everyone in the house know prior to your interview that you will be on an important video call. Be sure to also secure any animals away from your interview space beforehand.

7. Have Notes Ready

Post-it notes for mental refreshers or a copy of your resume comes in handy during an interview. This is one of the benefits of having an interview over FaceTime because you can have a cheat sheet right in front of you! You don’t have to memorize everything you want to mention.

Just be sure your notes are easily scannable, like quick to read one-line reminders versus a whole script.

While having notes certainly has its benefits, relying too heavily on them can make you look unprepared and unnatural during your interview. An interviewer won’t be impressed if they sense that you are just reading answers to them.

Keep your notes short and simple, and use them as talking points during your interview.
