Why Small Businesses Should Look At Data Management To Drive Revenues

March 13, 2020 / by Andrew / Leave a Comment

In 2020, any business, whether big or small, cannot afford to do without data. It is an asset of invaluable proportions. However, most businesses, especially smaller ones, are wary of working with data.

They feel the time, energy, investments and processes are too complicated for a small organization. They point out the technical knowledge, risks and other problems associated with working with data. However, all these fears are misplaced. In this article, we will look at how small businesses can effectively use data management to their advantage.

We will look at five key ways by which small business owners can reduce or eliminate their fears surrounding data. Before we begin, let us look at some of the major advantages of data management for organizations.

Advantages of Small Businesses working with Data

While there is a consensus regarding the advantages of working with data, small businesses think that they hold true for only bigger organizations.

  1. Effective usage of data helps in eliminating wastage and reduces errors.
  2. It helps in streamlining processes and avoids duplication of work.
  3. Data presents actions areas, which help in generating extra revenues.
  4. When done right, data management helps analyse the performance of employees.
  5. It saves time, improves efficiency, and leads to a leaner and meaner organization.

In addition, there are many other advantages like making projections, showing trends, estimating growths. Data helps small businesses plan steps for the future, explore new areas and reach new customers.

3 Important things Small Businesses should be careful about

No business strategy comes without its fair share of risks and precautions. The same holds true for small businesses who want to work with data.

According to Gartner mdm magic quadrant, small business owners should look out for the following three issues:

1. Ensure Safety and Security of the Data-

As small business owners are limited by financial capital, they tend to not focus on the safety of the data. This leads to cyber-attacks and other digital crimes, which are committed against such businesses.

It is important that you ensure that the data is protected at all times. Data is a double-edged sword, if you lose it, your competitors might use it against you. Hence, it is important that small businesses work with good data service providers at all times.

2. Create a culture of Data in your organization

Change is never something, which is accepted by the entire organization wholeheartedly. From so when it comes to small businesses. Being family driven, they have career employees who are averse to working with technology or going digital.

It is important that small business owners ensure that the transition to data is being welcomed. Working with data is as much psychological as it is technical. Unless you feel that this is going to improve the company, you are not going to invest in it.

3. Practice Data Governance

Which employees should have access to the data or what are you trying to achieve with data are some questions, which concern data governance. By fixing priorities, setting timelines and ensuring the internal and external flow of data, small businesses can thrive.

Data Governance is a crucial part of working with data. It sets the framework, the processes and the flow of data in place. In its advanced stage, it helps in ensuring data quality, consistency and execution strategies.

Conclusion

Every small business wants to take the leap to the next level. In this age of information technology and digital, data can help take that leap. Rather than being wary or fearful, entrepreneurs and traditional small business families should look to explore working with data.
