You want to ensure that the people you work with are listening to you. Just because you’re the head of the team doesn’t mean you will immediately get respect. It’s possible that you still end up being hated by many. It’s even worse when you’re a leader who can’t keep your word. You must remain faithful to your promises, no matter what happens.
Always think things through
Before you decide to release a statement or make a promise, you have to ensure that you think things through. Try to filter your words or else you will regret them. If you think there are promises you can’t keep, you have to stay quiet. You can consult with other people in your team before you make a final decision.
Avoid taking your words back
It would also be terrible if you don’t stay consistent. You can’t say one thing today and take it back tomorrow. For instance, if you promised everyone that you would release a performance bonus, you have to do it. You will run the risk of not having anyone believe in you anymore if you keep changing your statements. In the future, no one will trust you even if you’re telling the truth.
Don’t rush anything
If you make decisions affecting everyone, you have to take some time to think. The problem kicks in when you try speeding up the entire process. You can’t do it since it could cause more chaos and changes later. For instance, if you wish to implement a new policy in the office, you have to consult a lot of people. Make sure you hear everyone first. Otherwise, people will think that you don’t have their best interest at heart.
Fun events aren’t worth cancelling
Unless there’s a strong reason to cancel, you have to push forward with the idea of having a fun event at work. Whether it’s a dinner gala or a funfair hire, you have to make it happen. It’s an opportunity for your employees to enjoy a break. They don’t usually have it considering how busy they are with work. You want to give them something to be happy about. If you cancel these events for financial reasons or for no reason at all, it would be terrible for your image. The employees will think that you only use the company’s funds for selfish purposes. You couldn’t even invest in a one-day event that benefits everyone at work.
If there are instances when you think you’re unable to fulfil your promises and for a valid reason, you have to come clean. Don’t spin the story or hide the truth. You already made everyone doubt your integrity because of this decision. Your lies will make things even worse. No one will give you a chance anymore if you continue your habit of breaking promises and lying about them. Integrity is essential as a leader, and it should be a quality you possess.
