london calling; or a tribute to friends, bandannas and flipflops
last day of tour. was a great short little ripper pretty much topped off by last night is essen which was killer, although could have been disastrous since a certain reggae band had an hour sound check and then played for two hours which is completely thoughtless. i guess too much smoking down babylon huh?

still touring europe
dear diary,
internet access...finally. oh how i missed the bits and bites and all the 0 and 1 and whatever else the matrix of these digital days provides us with...so we're in germany now and to say we've been blown away by all the shows so far is putting it really mildly...it's been fucking amazing!!!
first and foremost a big thank you to all of you who took the time to come out to the shows so far...we truly appreciate it.
we had a beautiful evening in amsterdam, followed by a salsa night where my friend anna from eurotaph (the european division of epitaph records) tried to teach me how to dance salsa...

guys so sorry we haven't been writing
but we have been so busy and without the internet. oh yeh, the pain goes deep.
so i write you from the great nation of belgium which has long been a favorite place of ours to play. the people are nice, the food is good, shows generally insane because belgium is the capital of european metal. it it true, ask anyone.
it was truly sad to say goodbye to england. england we love your shores and love your people, uh if only you were a little cheaper!
goodbye to all we met, hopefully we will see each other soon and hopefully under warmer climates. it has been mad cold up in this piece. i am talking freezing like a mug. colder than bat country. which actually leads to a funny story....

tour diary - london heathrow/bradford, UK (day off)
greetings young jedi nights!!!
so our european tour started on a fine note with a travel day flying into london heathrow (sometimes we feel like tom hanks "the terminal", stuck in this very airport for far too often/long...), having some fine english breakfast there and meeting up with our bus. since HIFH decided not to be part of the tour, we have this doubledecker all to ourselves for the english dates, which is nice in a way...it gives reverend rakus the chance to have daily prayer meetings and indoctrinate our humble selves with his divine thoughts.

done.
dear diary,
it's hard to put in words how these last couple of days felt...we finally finished this album und it's safe to say that (at least as far as i'm concerned) it was the hardest project i ever worked on in my life (musically speaking and beyond)...
3 years down the road and here it is: THE MISERY INDEX: NOTES FROM THE PLAGUE YEARS
...and if there's a more fitting record title out there (i strongly doubt it)is questionable at best.
it wasn't easy and only god and 4 other dudes know how hard it really was to create this record, but when we all sat in matt's car the other day, listening to the final master, i have to admit it was well worth it...

11/15/2005 Boston, MA
dear diary,
sorry for neglecting you so harshly the last couple of days, but i had family on the road with me and that left me with less time for my friend the powerbook and this diary...we're in boston today, after our first headlinging show on this tour yesterday night in NYC.

lancaster, new jersey connecitut (i can never spell that state!)
well tonight was pretty awesome playing in our favorite amish outlet city in the world Lancaster. as always it was great playing with our good friends and hanging out with all of our newark friends and west chester friends and everyone else who were subjected to the barrage of noise we call boysetsfire.

i wish i was in the land of dixie
wow what a night. richmond, we love you so much! it was truly a pleasure to play our unique brand of soft rock for you last night.
so we get into richmond at around four thirty in the morning, exhausted from the drive out of north carolina. our friend and gordon’s brother chris (the ogre!) kindly let us stay at his house and so we all got into our sleeping positions and sacked out. i did take some time read some anne rice and i have to admit that i am kinda getting into it. anyways.....

november 8th, Richmond, VA
so i got to fill in for josh newton from FATA, who had to go home for a couple of days, for 4 songs on bass yesterday in raleigh (corey from the esoteric does the other half of the set) and it was a lot of fun. both shows (BSF & FATA) actually, so thank you to everyone who came out!

nov 6th, day off-driving
today is reserved for a pretty intense drive from orlando to raleigh or at least 2/3rds of the way...it started off with me being up (as usual) a good bit before the rest of the guys, sitting at our Motel 6 pool observing a gentelman undressing himself, putting on his speedos and going for a swim, which reminded me of....yeah, home and after his wife came down to the pool too i had to admit i wasn't overly suprised when they actually started speaking german...we like to get naked more than the average american which is how we recognize eachother far from home...so next time you see someone undressed publicly or one who rocks the mighty speedos just say "wie geht's?"
the day continued with more stories of last night's adventures, that matt & me missed due to an extended "goodfellas" session back at the hotel. but before too much sparks of bromance could fill the room i fell asleep 30 min into the movie...not only too lame to go out after a show, but now officially too lame to watch an entire movie...it's time to get some viagra & steroids (maybe wearing more speedos would help)
other than that it's rolling down the good old roads of 'merica (no a!) after a family lunch at denny's...my search for boild peanuts continues and since we just entered georgia i will most likely prevail after horrible dissapointments down in the sunshine state (denver right?!)...that and me & chuckles re-enachting "gone with the wind"...
what else can i tell you? they don't sell beer on sunday's here (which caused reverend rakus to have misty eyes), matt is pounding on the dashboard listening to the police (envisioning himself wearing tight 80's pants, striped shirts and huge sunglasses as a reincarnation of steward copeland...and killing him of course since he's far from dead), reverend rakus partly being depressed because of the lack of the required dayoff-buzz and partly watching harry potter movies...and as far as i'm concerned, daydreaming of kicking nathan in the nuts while playing tomorrow night.

goth dance club and a shot rang out!
so here we are safe in sound in orlando the land of mickey and great shows. we love this city and its people so much, we are a little dissapointed that we are not playing in our favorite location the Social where we historically have a blast playing, but such is life and there isn’t much we can do about that. Oh what’s that? what has happened the last few days? lemme tell and i will try to keep it brief......

south cakalaky and dern tootin'
last night we were in south carolina and had a very nice time playing music for our southern friends. the show was fun and more than made up for an incredibly boring day that started with a five hour drive and continued with us basically going into the club sitting for five minutes, losing interest, then going outside wandering around, looking at people, the sighing and going back into the club. ho-hum.....

tour diary nov 2005
november 1st, Atlanta, GA
after a 14 hour drive (including fierce i tunes DJ battles...)we arrived in hot-lanta and not only are we checking into a nice, little, cosy hotel (much different from the usual motel 6 or knights inn...), but next door is the famous "soul vegetarian restaurant south", which made some of our days...nathan, chad, josh and me stormed over there immediately and the food was divine. then it was nap time and off we were to greet the FATA guys, get our equipment together and so forth...getting the equipment together included putting together the world's biggest weight bench ever to bless a tour, which matt had brought along. the "putting together" made every work out afterwards unnecessary, cause it took quiet some time all in all and hence left us exhausted, but now the thing is set up and looking fierce. let's see how much we put it to use...the show was good and there were tons of people and bands (i guess two different shows got put together)...after we played and we packed everything up i went back to the nice hotel for some reading and another cold shower, while the rest of the bsf camp went out and i have yet to hear if they have a good time but something tells me chris rakus & co were able to spread the "black church halleluja" all over this beautiful city...all in all i don't think i ever had a better first day of tour.

the road less traveled
dear diary,
so the bsf camp (including the beloved mr. gordon "more game than gum" joines, reverend rakus & gene "the merch bin is mine" shaw) is getting ready for it's longest outing in 2005. as you have maybe encountered in THE STREET section already, we'll be touring 2 weeks with our friends from strong island (FATA) and then another week with FALL OF TROY, our EVR labelmates...this week will see us getting all of our dusty equipment together, packing and playing one more DE show on the 29th...and then it's up & down the right coast.
if you have a chance to swing by any of the beforementioned shows pls do so and know we really appreciate your support and interest. come up to us and say hi, chances are we're not doing anything and welcome meeting new friends...
so come out and make sure to be safe.
love,
robert

German Diary
Dear diary,
back home for a couple of days and it feels nice...even though i miss ms kate, the shore and the band...i got very excited when i heard SHOCK will be doing australia. what a great home for our little record for this amazing continent. i reall admire their work and it feels great to have them on board!
so put another shrimp on the barbie and all that...and josh is right: no vegamite!
so i'll be travelling up to frankfurt (a city i always thought rules...) to get my visa renewed and my sister is coming with me, so we can catch up...i'll play her some rough mixes of new songs and i can't wait what she says. other than that i spend my days relaxing, listening to the new ryan adams and the new alkaline trio over and over and over again...it took me a while to get into the new A3 but the song sadie made me fall in love with this great band all over again.
other jams on my beloved i-pod are gwen stefani, flyswatter demos, dandy warhols...and a friend played me everytime i die yesterday and i liked it a lot.
so that's all from me in rainy munich. i'm recovering from my oktoberfest visit and send my love to you out there.
be safe.
robert

Studio Journal - Tuesday, 20th September
One of the last days actually recording stuff...Nathan and Josh are doing the vocals for the song "the final communique" , which we have been playing live a bunch, so it goes really smoothly and it's fun...
I will be leaving for Germany on friday and spend some time with my family and also get some visa things figured out. Matt is flying to California and the driving back from there...
It's nice to spend some last quality hours in our beloved Ronald Regean Memorial Studio together...watching Chad's head making frantic movements back and forth while he's recording and teasing Josh about Dallas' yesterday's performance.
Good times here in Maryland really...and once i'm back we're gearing up for the FATA tour and some more headlinging dates...pls keep checking back in THE STREET for new dates.
Later,
Robert

Studio Journal 09/16/05
dear diary,
it's the 16th which is an exciting day due to mr chad istvan's 24th birthday (that's such a lie, but the young man is too handsome and younglooking to pay any attention to his actual age...)
me, chad and nathan hang out in the "r.r. memorial studio" in josh's basement and the record gets closer and closer to being done...only some more overdubs and noises and vocals and that's it...
i even got to scream, whine and mumble a couple of additional parts today, which was fun. it really is the best part about making a record, the little things you ad towards the very end...in my opinion anyways.
the record deals with EVR and BH are signed and everything is going great...
the draft (new hot water music) are staying at my house tonight so i better rush home and grill some corn for the whole floridian crew...robert

some thoughts
i am not going to write anything too emotional today the anniversary of 9/11 but i do have do have to say that my heart is breaking as i watch those who are still here read loved ones names off a piece of paper. Similar to the way i feel when i see the carnage in new orleans and the entire gulf coast. why must those most innocent pay most dearly? the guy working at krispy kreme at the world trade center had absolutely nothing to do with american middle-east oil policy just as the poor souls in our ravaged south had nothing to do with global warming or slashing the budget needed to keep the levees in good condition. what am i saying? any words of hope? nope, not today. maybe tomorrow.

oh yeah we got a studio diary
September 7
So a lot has happened since we last talked. We finished up at Nick’s and moved all our stuff back to the basement over here in good old Elkton.
Nathan’s almost done; he only has one song left, a rocking lil jam called the final communique. We are still doing overdubs and Chad has his backups and then I have to do my doglike yelpings.
After that its off to the mix which is still a little up in the air- I know we are going up to Studio 4 in Caunshahawken (sp?) and Phil Niccollo is going to spend one day mixing one song and then we are going to see if we are on the same page then we are going to decide.
By the way what do you guys think of our awesome website? we are pretty stoked on it! we wanna thank the guys at elany arts for doing an excellent job on the site

So this is the deal. We still don’t have a record deal but we are forging ahead regardless. We are very close and have the companies picked (they may surprise you) but the nagging little details still have to be ironed out. But we aint gonna let that stop us now are we? WE ARE RECORDING STARTING THIS WEEK! AND NOONE CAN STOP US! BLAH.
