wear our influences on our sleeves...
no band exists in a vacuum. as much as they might like you to think it, no band is wholly original and if they are they are probably terrible. all bands are the sum total of their influences and those that came before them that didn’t get the attention they should have.
i read interviews with bands all the time and i rarely see any of these “big” bands discuss the music they grew up listening to. the music that paved the way for them and the music that made their lives bearable.
all i see are interviews where impossibly hip musicians talk about how original they are and how they don’t belong to a “scene per se” and how they are starting something that no-one has ever tried.
uh....don’t think so. usually when they say that it, it is pretty obvious to me who they are ripping off. usually the used or gun and roses.
but it digress.
in the next few days before we leave for tour and maybe interspersed throughout the hilarious diaries entries i (and whoever wants to!) am gonna pay homage to the records that made me who i am. which is of course debatable wether that is a good thing or not.
my first choice for influences is billy by samiam.http://www.myspace.com/blackthroat
this album was introduced to me by our good friend leeroy who was the primary samiam fan in these parts. i had seen the name around but had always thought it was kinda a silly reference and thus wouldn’t really give them a chance until i was in townhouse on madison with a forty clutched in my hand and everyone sang out...
sitting in the corner i don't know what to think i can't speak i sink a little deeper with every drink i try to sleep i shut my eyes and like a leaky faucet fear floods the room the one that drips away patiently by day it was either lost or it was stolen but it's been missing for too long i woke up one morning and i couldn't see the sunrise i can't recall the exact moment now but it began some time ago and it makes me wonder after all i've done what have i got to show i'm aggravated i'm what you created now don't break me
samiam taught me melody and taught me intensity of emotion. in a more elemental musical vein, i also learned the “octave” chord from samiam and leeroy, to be specific.
check out these guys www.myspace.com/samiam
they have a new record coming out on burning heart :) and hopeless.

what's your #1 of all time?
Posted by: your mom's face (no offense lynn) at April 21, 2006 12:09 AM
dear friends,
even though i can't remember when i stumbled across each one of the following records, here are my top 5 of all time regarding hardcore and punk music:
1) shelter - attaining the supreme
2) refused - shape of punk to come
3) 108 - holyname
4) bad brains - i aginist i
5) cro mags - age of quarrel
...without these beautiful and powerful records i surely wouldn't play heavy music today and i guess even a lot of everyday choices down to my diet would have been different ones,,,
peace.

Clumsy as in our '97 release??? Thanks man. We had no idea you cared. Maybe we should start playing music again. You just made our day.

Oh wait, we still do play music. We just came out with 2 awful records. But our earlier stuff is actually pretty good. Thanks!

I know that this is a weird mix and a weird place to list these bands, but I would have to say, The Counting Crows, Rage Against the Machine and Hum. Albums: Recovering the Satellites, Self Titled, and Downward is Heavenward respectively.

oh, and the notwist band everybody should have heard...
Posted by: michel at April 24, 2006 03:07 PM
I gotta say, I love anything by BSF, Walls of Jericho, or good old Skeleton Key for cd's that i can just listen to at any given moment. Seriously, if i could put a show togeather with those 3 bands, it would be the fantastical feel good event of a lifetime.
Others cd's just shuffle in the mix here and there, ive found that A couple of those Postal Service songs are just too damn catchy to not listen to, and I recently dusted off some old Less than Jake and Hanzel Und Gretyl cds i havent listened to in ages.
