tour diary - switzerland

dear diary,

we're in switzerland currently trying to recharge our batteries after a fun show in basel yesterday night...we all had a lot of fun and the nice peeps at the "sommercasino" treated us perfectly well and even fed the skinny vegan (namely me!) with cruelty-free specialties...matt and me took a long walk throughout the inner city of basel and took pictures of this old and wonderful town...of course we also bought swiss chocolate for our families and went into a church, etc...pretending to be tourists and not travelling musicians for at least once a day is really helpful in reloading the batteries...makes you feel almost like a normal human being : )

today there's nothing to see really, since the club in Wil is kind of in the middle of nowhere, but we make the best out of it and retreat to the tikki-lounge backstage area where reverend rakus is currently residing next to me on a zebra couch confessing last night's events...i went to bed early the last couple of nights, so i missed all the fun after the shows...i couldn't get myself to be more active than have a couple of adult beverages with the blessing of the reverend together with the beautiful people of tribute to nothing...a very cool band and if you love good music you should check out their new cd!!!
it's been such a good time to share this nice tour with them...they truly deserve to be heard and all in all this tour is perfect and we're stoked.

i feel like a goddamn hippie (that i of course am...everyone who knows me can attest to that...i just hide it well & deep within indian spirituality, haha), but what can a young man do when he lives a dream with his best friends???
exactly...smile and then smile some more...

so now i''ll watch the new beatsteakes dvd again and sing along to germany's best band...flyswatter coming in a close second!

be good and treat yourself well nice friends and i write more soon.

peace.

robert

In Greek mythology there's a phenomenon called hybris. I'd like to bring this phenomenon to the attention of some BSF members (especially Natan), because for me it typified the atmosphere in the MuziekoDroom in Hasselt on the 16th of March. Almost all myths, fairy tales and legends have a very distinctive story line, they always begin with a situation of natural harmony and happiness, where good morality and rightful values prevail (modesty, idealism, etc.), take for example the primitive, innocent state of life on earth before Prometheus gave fire to mankind, or the garden of Eden. In a second phase of the story the good natured protagonist commits the error of hybris, it is the point where Adam and Eve listen to the snake and eat from the tree of Knowledge, it is the point in the history of mankind where technology, science and rationality are developped to gain mastery over nature, it is the point where Prometheus steals fire from the gods, the good values of the precedent phase taken for granted, vanity becomes Leitmotif. The thrid phase in the story line is that of general decadence, good values are lost, deluge, an environmental crisis, and other Apocalyps associates set in. This mythical structure still dominates the ways we make sense of the world (by the way, this also shows that although we may think we are atheist, christiniaty and it's creation myths still build our conceptual frameworks)and I guess that includes me, because hybris was the way I made sense of the general gestures, the overall radiation and behaviour I saw that Thursday. I really don't mean to sound didicatic or lecturing, but maybe my modest observation could be of some help to you.

All the best

Caroline

to night is THE night. ;p bsf in vienna.

Posted by: johannes at March 25, 2006 06:23 AM

i;ve always thought it was hubris, not hybris.

WHAT happened on Thursday that spurred this response???

(did nathan fly too high and get his waxed wings melted by the sun again)

Posted by: jason at March 25, 2006 07:18 AM

Yeah, I have always heard "hubris," too...Please, BSF, do enlighten us as to what Caroline could have been referring!!!!!

Hey guys!
The shows in Switzerland were soooo amazing!! I really enjoyed both a lot!! But I still feel bad about "Déjà Coup" in Wil... Remember? I'm the girl who wrote you a note to sing and play this song which is like one of my favourite of the new album. Nathan's excuse was that you hadn't a trombone with you but you played So Long... And Thanks For The Crutches which also had trombone so... not a really good excuse... Whatever, it was really good shows! Tribute to Nothing was really good too, I bought their CDs ^___^ Can't wait to see you play again!! Hope you'll come back soon!
