making a set list, oh the horror
well, the guys are coming over in a few hours and we are going to bring our equipment back into the basement, set it up, and figure out a setlist. making a setlist is one of the most difficult things for us. however it didn’t used to be.....
we used to go on tour in the early days and simply play every song we had. we had two demos out, that’s eight songs, that’s eight songs, easy peazy we would play eight songs. no one cared what we played because no one knew any of the songs. maybe we did nine songs if we were feeling especially salty, but that was a rarity.
now? oh now it is just agony. there are some songs we are always gonna play, your ATE, your rookie, your knife trade, you know, the old faithfulls, but in what order? what other songs? how many new ones? what song do we strart with? which do we end with? this one is tuned weird, it cant run into that one. oh no! we gotta do samples! this is horrible....
it is even harder in europe. the first time we went over there we played our typical eight songs. that went over like a turd in a punch bowl, that is to say not very well. a couple hundred angry germans stared at us and wondered who these fricking rock stars were. we didn’t know! in usa rockstars play forever. we didn’t know!
do i sound whiney? well maybe i feel a little whiney ok! i got a cut on my hand and it hurts.
so here is a thought.
why dont you guys come up with a set list for this little run into europe we got coming up. we are thinking maybe sixteen songs or so. maybe a cover. some new ones.
i will leave you with this.
is it too early too cover refused? a song from fanning the flames? let me know!

The Abominations Of Those Virtuous is one of my absolute favorites, but I've never seen you guys play it live.
Posted by: Anonymous at November 30, 2005 04:15 PM
Please put on some old songs on the list. I really missed them during the Deconstruction Tour in 2003. Then you guys only played pure and the rest was all from the ATE and TCT.
The power remains the same, Pure, In hope, Cavity.
Posted by: Michiel at November 30, 2005 04:55 PM
Hmmm. There are so many good songs.
But I would be sad if you don´t play "My life in the knife trade" because it touches my heart and I have an own story...
I would like to hear some of the new songs. Maybe 8 of the 16. So you can test how the audience reacts and we get to know some new stuff.
The other 8:
My life in the knife trade, Rookie (sure;)), In hope, Another badge of courage, Cavity, Curtain Call, Holiday in cambodia, High wire escape artist, Bathory´s Sainthood, Last year´s nest...
Okay... so you should play 18 songs. ;)
I really thought about it and I personally think that this would be a PERFECT Playlist. :)

I love it when you open with ATE
Posted by: Voltron at November 30, 2005 05:16 PM
1 ATE
2 highwire escape artist
3 homwtown report card
4 unspoken request
5 since the cd isnt out yet you should play about four or five new songs all together. I've seen a few bands do that and it's really cool. The kids know whats gonna be played for awhile and they can get used to the new songs.
9 pure
10 the force majuere
11 knife trade
13 release the dogs
14 bathorys sainthood
15 resection( if you play it in europe you might play it here and the states and a man can dream can't he? since this is most unlikely any song of In chrysalis works well too)
16 rookie
Posted by: steve at November 30, 2005 09:00 PM
Release the dogs (I liked this the most as opening song like in 2003, of course ATE is also great)
---
hometown report card
pure
cavity
after the eulogy
my life in the knife trade
pariah under glass
unspoken request
handful of redemption
last years nest
curtain call
4 new songs would be good I think, I'm very curious to the new material but I rather see many of them in the set after the record has been released
---
Rookie (just the perfect final song)
And a cover song would be cool :) But I don't know which one
Posted by: Rich at November 30, 2005 09:42 PM
first of all, I want a 90 minute set.
I can't think enough to do an order, here are the songs though
after the eulogy
release the dogs
in hope
resection
management vs labor
timothy
still waiting for the punchline
last year's nest
with every intention
my life in the knife trade
cavity
requiem
empire
10 and counting
Nostalgia for Guillotines
So Long and Thanks for the Crutches
Cover Song -- Sunday Bloody Sunday (or maybe Paint it Black)which segues into Dear George
Rookie

ATE
Dying On Principle
12 Step Hammer Program
New Song
Last Year's Nest
Knife Trade
Still Waiting for the Punchline
Release The Dogs
New Song
The Force Majeure
Pure
Cover - Maybe Rather Be Dead, Hook, Line, and Sinker, or Coup'Detat ooo or Deadly Rhythm
Cavity
Management vs Labor
Rookie
Vehicle
Encore
Live Wire :)

1. ATE (for video-proof that this is an amazing start for a show)
2. Redemption (I don't wanna people yell "play redemption" all the time...)
3. Final communique
4. Looser of the year award (instead of always playing cavity)
5. Cringe
6. Bathorys Sainthood
7. 12 Step Hammer Program
8. Requiem
9. Vehicle
10. Knife Trade
11. Release the dogs
12. Resection (I have to hear this song live!)
13. Curtain Call or Pure
14. Rookie
Encore:
15. In hope
16a. Force Majure
16b. Cover song: Well, you wrote that you are a fan of SHAI HULUD (so am I), so why not cover "Hardly"? I think it fits great for bsf! (and I would help nathan sream "AND DO I GAIN")
Posted by: yours-truly at December 1, 2005 07:32 AM
I'll be at the gig in Paris. If you could play "Timothy" there, you'd really make my day. Thanks.
3 or 4 new songs for a 16 song set are probably a good deal.
And i second Rich's proposal for the cover song !! Especially Paint it Black.
Posted by: F. at December 1, 2005 09:43 AM
Why does nobody want to hear 'Across 5 years'? That song gets no love, and it's great.
Posted by: Rob at December 1, 2005 10:04 AM
I've seen BSF about a dozen times or so, most recently last month at Sonar in Baltimore. Great set, lots of fun (even though the singer clocked me in the back of the head with a water bottle from about 3 feet away for no particular reason. I guess I'm just happy he didn't spit on me or even in my general direction this time). I'd say as a rule of thumb that you shouldn't play more than one song that hasn't been released. I think there were about 3 unreleased tracks in the Baltimore show. It was a small crowd and people were really in to it, but once you started breaking out unreleased stuff everyone just kind of stood still. So 1 unreleased track, and probably only 1 cover song (and it's never too soon to do a Refused song).

Today i just hope to get a ticket for the show in cologne (it is already sold out!). For me it is no matter what songs will be played, because all of them are great. But if i got a wish, i would prefer a set list with all these rarities, hard to find in germany, on it (just like the split LP with Jazz Man´s Needle). And of course some of the very new songs...
my set list would be:
01. after the eulogy
02. in the wilderness
03. vehicle
04. the tyranny of what everybody knows
05. the power remains the same
06. voiceover
07. feudal
08. in hope
09. fashion as a weapon
10. my life a knife trade
11. fade to black (metallica cover)
12. unspoken request
13. curtain call
For me these are the best of BSF songs. i do not thing that i would hear all those songs at the show, but i am sure that there are enough new songs to fill up the list.

across five years (even though it didn't fit in my ideal set, the song is amazing)
the power remains the same (saw it in '01 when you guys hadn't played it in so long and forgot how!! it ruled)
in hope (shouted for it to nathan in sayreville, didn't get it, but that's ok!)
voiceover (oh man)
the abominations of those virtuous (one of the most intense bsf songs ever)
unspoken request
also, the remix of still waiting for the punchline is ACE

How about covering Rocket man, since it's a world known song and since it's not on the Before the Eulogy cd, but the back cover says it is... at least its not on mine! Good thing I have Suckerpunch Training or you'd all be in it deep!
Roger
Posted by: Roger at December 1, 2005 08:31 PM
Just a few favorites that I hope people have not lost sight of (in no particular order):
Suckerpunch training
The tyranny of what everyone knows
Cadence
Another Badge of Courage
Toy Gun Anthem
Resection
Of course anything off the newer albums is also clutch, though I/we have always been a fan of the oldies
Posted by: Anthony at December 1, 2005 11:40 PM
Play that one song called "your moms face."
p.s. get tested is dead...
Posted by: .Gordon. at December 1, 2005 11:41 PM
OH, about the cover. Perhaps another DK cover such as Too Drunk to Fuck, Religious Vomit, or Nazi Punks Off.
Posted by: Anthony at December 1, 2005 11:43 PM
also,
you guys NEED to tour with a wilhelm scream
what a great pair right there
Posted by: dan perrone at December 1, 2005 11:52 PM
When retoric dies is one of the best songs you`ve writen....and Rocket man would be great!!!
See you in Cologne!!!!!!!
Posted by: Mathias at December 2, 2005 04:23 AM
Interesting you say that Dan. I spoke with Chris from A Wilhelm Scream and he said they would love to play shows with BSF. I would also love this, too bad the soonest it could happen would be summer of next year. AWS is touring with lagwagon, less than jake, and then probably rise against. BSF, Rise Against, AWS? I'd be down for that.
And you're also right that Across fiver years is an amazing song that needs more love. Damnit, I need to see BSF again.

robert´s mom shoud get the manager job...she know´s what people want!
Posted by: Fitze at December 2, 2005 08:31 AM
that's really cool about talking to a wilhelm scream
rise against is a good band, and would also draw...actually, at this point in time, all three bands can draw
i say throw crime in stereo in there for good measure...solid, young, and fun hardcore band that's on the way up big time
and hot water music if they ever play shows again, what an awesome five-some; don't even need openers for that one, because we saw what happens with certain openers! am i right!
:D ohhh and sorry about treating this like a bulleting board hahah

...talking about putting all our favourite bands together on one tour: don't leave the bouncing souls behind!
my ideal package would be hot water music+bouncing souls+bsf. every band playing their version of the souls "true believers" at the end of their set. the hwm-version of true believers rocks even more than the original one, it would be fun to see what bsf can make out of it!!!

Posted by: Kellee at December 2, 2005 03:47 PM
my fondest memory of boy sets fire is a show probably about 6 or 8 years ago at the fireside bowl. You guys played The Power Remains the Same and the place went nuts. I think the song ended with Nathan twisted up like a pretzel somewhere in the crowd, like 30 kids on stage and the rest of the band surrounding the drum set to keep people from falling on to it. it was incredible. sooo... that song should be a regular in my mind, and the list:
voiceover
the tyranny of what everybody knows
rookie
resection
new song
hometown report card
in hope
in the wilderness
two new stuff
fine art of falling
cadence
new song
pariah under glass
the power remains the same

i think you should def go with a more fun sided refused cover of "let's go crazy"
that should get the train rollin' pretty good ;-)

I'm thinking maybe you shouldn't play any songs at all.
Obviously you can't please everybody, so why please anybody at all?
If I were you, I'd go out on stage, spend about 20 minutes tuning, eat a pizza, then leave.

Then somewhere in the middle:
Highwire Escape Artist
Toy Gun Anthem
12 Step Hammer Program
My Life in the Knife Trade
On in Five (would love to see that played live)
Vehicle
As long as all those are played it would be a kick ass set!!
What about The Clash for a band to cover?
Posted by: Big Dave at December 9, 2005 09:52 AM
I'm not reading all of the other comments because I'm lazy, but you should always open with After the Eulogy.
Also, The Power Remains the Same is always nice to see. As for a Refused cover, I think BSF could pull off "New Noise" pretty well. Plus, it's one of Refused more well-known songs, and that always helps when covering things.
Anyway, just my two cents. Also, fuck Europe, play the west coast more. :(
